Normes et dynamiques sociales liées aux mutilations génitales féminines dans le Mandoul

The objective of this study is to help actors involved in the PASFASS project to understand the social, economic and legislative factors that influence the continued existence of female genital mutilation (FGM) in Chad’s Mandoul Region. Specifically, it aims to understand the social and symbolic function of female genital mutilation in building women’s identity and updates understanding of norms and popular justifications related to FGM. It analyses how its criminalization has affected the practice, and it updates understanding of the characteristics that contribute to maintaining these practices, whether geographical (urban/rural), social (age/sex/social class), or related to identity or ethnicity.
