This study was commissioned by the UNICEF Eastern and Southern Africa Regional Office to achieve greater clarity on UNICEF's support to education in emergency situations. It was undertaken in four countries in the region, viz., Rwanda, Somalia, Southern Sudan and Uganda.

The current emergencies in all four countries are human-made, caused by civil war and insurgency. These emergencies have had a very negative impact on education in these countries although the size of the affected areas and the duration of the crisis in each vary considerably.
