This report touches upon diverse human rights violations against Guatemalan children living in institutions, including a description of how volunteerism feeds the reproduction of Guatemala's orphanage system and exposes children to heightened inequality, segregation, and abuse. The specific information on voluntourism is based on the study of two orphanages (“Esperanza de Vida” and "Dori's promises") where international volunteers pay enormous amounts of money for Guatemalan standards to stay "in a 4-story building with air-conditioned luxury rooms surrounded by an artificial lake".
