Migrants' Access to Land in Periurban Beijing

Farmland in periurban Beijing is owned by local rural
collective units (village committees) but is primarily
cultivated by migrants without local hukou (household
registration). This is different from the typical agricultural
production in China where farmland is both owned and
cultivated by the local rural population. Two case studies
(see figure 1) were conducted in Haidian district of the
Beijing suburbs to explore how migrants in Beijing gain
access to land.
