Huangshan's broad range of forest habitats support a rich variety of flora and fauna, estimated to include over 1 800 species of plants and 456 species of vertebrates. Many of these are considered rare or endangered. In 2014, FAO implemented the five-year project ‘’Securing Biodiversity Conservation and Sustainable Use in Huangshan Municipality’’. The project's specific objective is to “evaluate, adapt, and implement relevant best practices derived from the successful management of Huangshan National Scenic Reserve to strengthen and upgrade the existing municipal system of protected areas.” This mid-term evaluation documents important lessons to guide the remaining phase of the project and will serve as an input to improve its implementation.
