Floods are the most common disasters in Ethiopia, accounting for approximately 45% of disasters between 1980 to 2020. The flood events of 2020 left 1.1 million people affected and 313,000 persons displaced. The Government of Ethiopia was supported by Advancement of Recovery Initiatives for Safer Ethiopia project (ARISE II) to provide affected communities with non-food items (NFI). The booklet captures stories of resilient community members who are gradually rebuilding their livelihoods with the program’s support. ARISE project was implemented by the Asian Disaster Preparedness Center (ADPC) in partnership with the Ethiopian Disaster Risk Management Commission (EDRMC) and with financial support from the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation (the foundation).
