The Syrian Displacement Crisis: Gender Alert

Humanitarian assistance is crucial to the survival of the refugees and IDPs. Consequently, it is imperative to understand the vulnerabilities, needs and capacities of displaced women, girls, boys and men. Efforts to collect sex-and age-disaggregated data to inform the response must be strengthened in order to ensure that the needs of women, girls, boys and men of all ages are targeted effectively.

Within Syria, more than half of the population is currently displaced. Countries hosting refugees are working hard to provide shelter, potable water, basic food, sanitation, education, medical care and psychosocial support to meet the essential needs of the displaced while minimizing the impact on host communities and fragile environments. Extraordinary efforts are being made to register refugees in spite of the significant number of new arrivals. However, a significant number of refugees have not been able to register, particularly in Lebanon, which prevents them
from accessing basic services.
