Objectives: To examine the origins of malnutrition in Niger, and particularly the crisis of 2005; to explain how, in a year of seemingly undramatic production failure, a combination of long-term structural problems and short-term cyclical factors led to a peak in admissions to feeding centres before, during and after the hunger gap of 2005.
