Tawanmandi, an initiative launched by a consortium of donors, aims to strengthen Civil Society Organisations (CSOs) across Afghanistan. The programme aims to build on the progress made during the past 10 years for CSOs to engage with the government of Afghanistan. The aim of the programme is to work with selected CSOs, especially in the provinces outside of Kabul, in order to improve government’s accountability, responsiveness and respect for human rights. In order to inform strategy for the initial stages of the programme the Tawanmandi team hired Peace Training & Research Organisation (PTRO) to carry out a mapping process of CSOs across Afghanistan.

The aim of the research project was to assess the current activity of CSOs in the sectors of focus for the Tawanmandi initiative , specifically human rights, access to justice, anti
-corruption, peacebuilding & conflict resolution, and media. Further the study aimed to analyse influences on CSOs operating in these sectors and their relationships with relevant
government ministries.
