Transdisciplinarity is an approach to research that goes beyond interdisciplinarity, where
researchers from different disciplines work together on problems across disciplinary
boundaries. It means working with other stakeholders, including policy-makers, to
develop shared research agendas and to interpret the implication of results for policy; and
collaborating on the research itself with operational agencies and research subjects, and
public, private and third sector actors who will be affected by any decisions that are made.
It is an iterative, inclusive process where different attitudes and values are respected
and taken into account, different forms of knowledge including existing local knowledge,
practical experience and research are integrated into decisions, and the results of new
policies and programmes are continuously monitored to ensure successful implementation.
