Protracted refugee settings present a challenging environment for health and nutrition programming, particularly in remote
areas like Dadaab and Kakuma, where living conditions are harsh and difficult. Despite various challenges — lack of proper
infrastructure and funding, arid climate, limited livelihood opportunities and compromised security — the nutrition situation
in Kenyan refugee camps has been showing a trend toward improvement over the past few years; and by 2010 the global
acute malnutrition rate indicators have reached their lowest levels ever – 5.6% in Hagadera and 7.6% in Kakuma.
