People need to live in a healthy environment, or their well-being is put in danger. This is the case in everyday life and is even more important in humanitarian crises. Environmental degradation inhibits people’s capabilities and resilience in many ways, from incomes and livelihoods to impacts on health, education and other dimensions of well-being.

The systematic integration of environmental considerations throughout response operations makes recovery activities more effective, contributes positively to sustainable development, and lays a foundation for conflict resolution and peacebuilding. Environmental considerations also help mitigate the impact of climate change and support climate change adaptation.
