Since 1970, the United Nations has endorsed a target for developed countries to spend 0.70% of their Gross National Income (GNI) on overseas aid spending, known as Official Development Assistance (ODA). The UK met this target each year between 2013 and 2020 and is one of only 14 countries to have ever met the target. Five other countries met the target in 2020.1 The UK made meeting the target a legal requirement in 2015. The UK looks to meet but not exceed the target. For example, between 2013 and 2020 it aimed to spend exactly 0.70% of GNI on ODA.
