The Humanitarian Leadership Academy and the British Red Cross released at the World Humanitarian Action Forum a new publication: “Local Humanitarian Action in Practice: Case Studies and Reflections of Local Humanitarian Actors”, which highlights successes and the unique challenges faced by local humanitarian actors. The publication is launched over a year after the Grand Bargain commitments were affirmed by the international community. Read the full press-release here.

The case studies highlight the experiences of 10 national and local humanitarian organisations across Central and South Africa, the Horn of Africa, the Middle East, and South and South-East Asia that have led or managed humanitarian response. These local actors operate in areas that are highly vulnerable to recurrent natural and climate-induced disasters, instability, civil conflict, and other emergencies.

The importance of local humanitarian organisations is steadily growing in many countries across the world. As the case studies in this report  shows, local organisations are increasingly willing and able to manage the impact of humanitarian crises in their own countries.

One of these case studies, Caritas Goma, Democratic Republic of Congo: Promoting a social justice lens to humanitarian action (p. 36), was developed with the support of the DEPP Learning Project Country Learning Advisor in the DRC.
