Gender Concerns - Somalia Famine/Drought

Taking into account the distinct needs and capacities of women, girls, boys and men makes our humanitarian
response more effective and equitable.
Experience from past humanitarian crises reveals that the distinct assistance and protection needs of crisis-affected
women, girls, boys and often go unrecognized by the humanitarian community, and as result, impact of programmes is
comprised. Women, girls, boys and men experience famine and drought in distinct ways and they have differential access
to and control over food, health, shelter, clean water and sanitation facilities. Failing to address these differences can
increase disparities and further marginalize vulnerable groups, and in worst cases, lead to further harm.
