The Ilha Grande Bay (BIG) is one of the richest biodiversity areas in Brazil, and meanwhile is identified to be economically important for the country’s fisheries, aquaculture, mariculture and tourism. To preserve and make sustainable use of the BIG Ecosystem and its terrestrial and marine biodiversity, FAO launched a joint project together with INEA and SEA in 2011. Through the development and implementation of a pilot Integrated Ecosystem Management (IEM) approach in the Bay, the project created a good basis for the achievement of the general objective. Overall, the project has been considered satisfactory. However, during project implementation changes to outputs should be documented in a more structured and organized manner, and stronger inter-institutional cooperation is needed in the Bocaina Mosaic.
