Following an earthquake off the coast of Padang, Western Sumatra (Indonesia) at the end of September 2009, considerable damage was done in both urban and rural areas affected. Over 1,000 people lost their lives, and there was widespread damage to property, access and livelihoods. The humanitarian community responded via a range of relief and recovery interventions, delivered by up to 200 separate agencies.
Several member agencies of the Alliance2015 partnership were already in Indonesia and they mobilised staff for initial emergency assessments. Concern Worldwide, which did not have a presence in Indonesia, responded by fielding its own emergency assessment team. Following several individual and joint assessments, and in consultation with other actors, the government and the UN system, it was proposed that a cash-for-work (CFW) project could be implemented to provide immediate economic inputs to some of the affected communities. It was further agreed that rather than establish its own short-term presence in the area, Concern would support a partner agency (ACTED) to implement the work. Activities ran from late October 2009 to 31 January 2010.
