An OXFAM Action for Gender Relations in south east Asia (AGRA East) workshop held in Thailand in February 1993 focused on the impact of armed conflict on women. Women's suffering in times of war, as well as their contributions to family and community survival, have been neglected topics. Present-day armed conflicts tend to arise in the context of the declining power of marginalized, impoverished states and to reflect factors such as environmental degradation, political inequality and repression, and the growing scarcity of subsistence resources.
