Conflict, displacement and reintegration: household survey evidence from El Salvador

This report presents findings from research on the economic consequences of conflict, refugee
flight and displacement for households in El Salvador.1 The research uses existing survey
instruments to identify individuals and households who have been displaced by war, and examines
the consequences in terms of their predisposition to poverty and their transition from poverty over
time. The findings underscore the need for multilateral, bilateral and national development
strategies to be targeted to provide support to those populations disproportionately affected by war
and in particular to support the economic reactivation of the former conflictive zones in El
Salvador. Moreover, efforts should be made to compensate for the lack of human capital
investment in the former conflictive zones and to target investment activities towards the rebuilding
of social capital.
