Handicap International (HI) has been working in Angola since 2005. Its Mine Risk Education projects varied until 2006 according to the fast evolution of the country, from a war (emergency context) to peace and a transition period (development context) which allowed HI to strengthen its MRE experience. The HI team in Angola adapted methodology and tools to manage MRE projects in line with the specific challenges of working in Angola.

Today, the HI Angolan project experience is a rich source of information. It is therefore paramount to produce a comprehensive analysis in order to capitalise on this experience and draw out the benefits and lessons learned.

This paper highlights three components of this project:

  1. The network: the MRE network in the Angolan context and the MRE facilitation and stimulation.
  2. The community-based approach.
  3. The partnership with a local NGO.
