Gaborone is a city of approximately 208,000 people (2005).
The Urban Food Security Baseline Survey was undertaken in
October 2008, with a sample of 400 households drawn from
three poorer areas of the Gaborone: Old Naledi (150
households), White City (125 households) and Broadhurst
(125 households). Although there were an equal number of
female and male headed households, there were
significantly more female-centred households (47%) than
male-centred households (23%). The sample had a low level
of formal education with 71% either having no formal
education or primary education, 17% had some form of high
school education and 11.8 % had post secondary education.
About a third of the sample (38%) was full time employees,
10% were part-time/casual workers, with a further 16%
were actively looking for work. Monthly incomes ranged
from P50 to P11349 with an average of P1344 and a median
of P800. Only 24 % of households had a steady income.
