It is important that any mitigation and preparedness measures taken up in coastal areasshould also consider the multi-hazard nature of these areas. In addition, the coastal states(Fig. 1) of India are not uniform in terms of intensities and occurrences of various hazards(GoI 2006). In most cases, women, children, marginalized sections, and the poor bear thebrunt of disasters; therefore, minority communities, civil society organizations, and NGOsshould actively engage in the decision-making process of disaster risk reduction measures.
