WhyDev: Professionalising Aid Work: The Missing Links

“The findings present a worrying picture of our sector. Humanitarian workers continue to face major barriers to training and professional development opportunities. For field- based staff, these barriers appear particularly insurmountable. Perhaps unsurprisingly the survey findings suggest that the humanitarian career pathway and barriers to access are as much about organisational culture and planning as they are about the physical location and cost of courses” (Jess Camburn, Director of ELRHA).

The findings Jess refers to can be found in the latest survey of professional development in the humanitarian sector, as conducted by Enhancing Learning and Research for Humanitarian Assistance (ELRHA). This is ELRHA’s second global survey, the first being a scoping study in April 2010, which demonstrated from over 1,500 responses that the sector suffers from uneven provision, fragmentation and uncoordinated approaches.
