In April 2015, Handicap International assessed the damage caused by the fighting in the city of Kobani and the surrounding villages. The team found an appalling illustration of the devastating consequences of the intensive use of explosive weapons in populated areas by all parties in Syria: civilians killed and injured, homes and infrastructure destroyed, and populations in danger when trying to settle back and rebuilding their lives.

This factsheet provides an overview of the types and density of explosives contamination in Kobani and formulates recommendations to states, conflict parties and the international community to protect people from the consequences of explosive weapons.
