A briefing guide for mayors, city executives and urban planners in developing countries and countries in transition to strengthen the vitality and effectiveness of food supply and distribution systems.

The guide is arranged in the following manner: the first two parts identify the
informal food sector and its role in the supply and distribution of food. The third
part exposes the shortcomings of the informal food trade and the problems that it
presents for urban management. A number of solutions to these problems are
discussed in the fourth part which deals with intervention modalities. Selected
examples of municipal support policies for the informal food trade are given in the
annexes by way of orientation for effective strategies.
