On September 30, 2009 an earthquake of 7.9 hit the city of Pandang in West Sumatra causing major destruction in the city and nearby districts of Pariaman and Agam. Over 1,100 people were killed and 1,200 injured. In coordination with other agencies CARE and P3SD focused its response in the sub-districts of Sungai Garingging and Batang Gasan, from a base established in the town of Pariaman where CARE and P3SD provided assistance to a total of 9,663 households in these two sub-districts including the distribution of household, hygiene & temporary shelter kits, as well as safe water supplies.
