In 2013, the emergency operation of the DRC makes up more than 65 % of the total operation. Since June 2012, when DRC became one of only a handful of INGOs permitted to respond to the needs of the conflict affected Syrians, DRC has provided emergency assistance (hygiene kits) to some 100,000 people in the governorate of Deraa. (ECHO) Meanwhile, DRC provides various forms of NFIs; winter assistance in areas such as Homs and Rif Damascus. (DANIDA; ECHO; ERF, SIDA etc.) During the latter half of 2012, such assistance reached more than 110,000 people. As of March 2013, DRC is one of the biggest providers of humanitarian aid inside Syria planning to expand its operation to the North, here in particular Aleppo. At the time of writing, the DRC and its partner SARC is scaling up its focus on cross-line operations. This will relate both to the Northern part of the country as well as Dera, Homs and Rif Damascus.

As part of its emergency response, DRC also rehabilitates schools used by internally displaced populations (IDPs) as temporary shelters to ensure a minimum standard of living conditions and basic sanitary conditions there. (ECHO; DANIDA, UNHCR) So far, DRC has rehabilitated and equipped with relevant sanitary installations more than 15 shelters in Rif Damascus and will during 2013 undertake such works also in Aleppo Governorate as well as Deraa.
