14 Dec 2022

Johan Schaar has written to ALNAP members today to let them know that he will be standing down as Chairperson of ALNAP’s Steering Committee following 6 years in the role. Hesham Youssef – Senior Fellow and the United States Institute of Peace (USIP) – will take up the position on 1 Jan 2023.

Read Johan’s letter to members below.

I am writing to inform you that as of 31 December 2022 I will end my tenure as Chair of ALNAP’s Steering Committee after almost 6 years in the role.

It has been a privilege to serve ALNAP. During my time as chair I am proud to have supported our Secretariat through some challenging times. It was especially rewarding to work with the Secretariat to ensure ALNAP continued to facilitate and share essential learning throughout the COVID pandemic, building on the collective experience of our members from large-scale health crises. And I am happy to have celebrated our 25th anniversary and the launch of the State of the Humanitarian System report, with its uniquely comprehensive and in-depth analysis of all aspects of humanitarian action.

Hesham Youssef will begin his role as Chair on the 1 January 2023. He will write to you to introduce himself in the coming weeks.

I would like to take this opportunity to thank you for choosing to become a member of ALNAP. Learning is critical to improving humanitarian performance – whether we deliver aid well or poorly during a crisis can make a difference in the numbers of people reached and lives saved.

I wish you every success in your work, wherever you are in the world and in whichever role you serve.

Yours sincerely,

Johan Schaar
